クローフィッシュ斑尾ロッジは、赤坂でライブハウスを20013年6月まで経営していたジェイクとキャロル夫婦が、長野県斑尾高原で二人で手をかけて作り上げたペンション(B&B)です。手作り故、至らないところも多いかもしれませんが、温かみは劣らないと思います。広い部屋、充分なな設備で、ゆっくりとおくつろぎいただきたいと思います。

Join us in the middle of the forest 1000 meters above the sea on Madarao Mountain!

Jake and Carol have always loved getting out of the big city and relaxing in the cool, clean mountain air of Nagano. After years of running bars in Tokyo, Jake found a property he couldn’t resist on Madarao Mountain. It was just the right combination of elegance and fixer-upper: the perfect project! It gives a sense of privacy and seclusion that Jake and Carol crave while still being convenient located 15 minutes off the highway and near a future Hokuriku Shinkansen (bullet train) stop opening in 2015!

Jake has managed all the renovations himself and will continue to build and improve on Crawfish Madarao for years to come. (Carol mostly helps for photo ops. and gives lots of moral support) J

Jake is a Japanese musician from Tokyo and Carol is an IT recruiter from Minnesota via Tokyo. With their dog and newborn daughter, they opened Crawfish Madarao Lodge in December 2013.

Crawfish History

Crawfish Kita Senju 2000~2009
2000 Jake opens Crawfish Kita Senju. Jake grew up in Adachi ward of Tokyo and still has a house there along side the house he grew up in. He ran Kita-senju Crawfish as a neighborhood bar/restaurant and hosted live music on weekends. He contributed to music events and neighborhood festivals during the 9 years that he ran the business.
2002 With the onset of World Cup Japan/Korea and growing interest in adult soccer leagues, Crawfish starts Crawfish Football Club. At 40 years old, Jake decided to try play for the first time in his life! He has since left the team, but Crawfish FC continues in the Adachi adult leagues. They consistently place in the middle of three league levels and enjoy playing for fun and exercise.
July 2009 After a small kitchen fire and dwindling sales in recession, Jake closed Crawfish Kita Senju with loose plans to re-invest in something more marketable in the current economic climate .

Crawfish Akasaka 2009~ (still open with new ownership/management)
September 2009 With the help of Carol (fiancé at the time), Jake opens Crawfish Akasaka. Jake and Carol are convinced the central location of Akasaka and theme of good music, good sound will bring out people who still have money to spend and create a great venue for musicians and music-lovers alike. In the 4 years of ownership, Jake renovated three times: broadening the stage for larger bands/performances, pushing back the bar and creating a larger space for customers and an open kitchen, and cutting the 2nd floor in half to better see the stage from the stadium viewing of a real balcony.

2013年5月

東京から250キロ離れた斑尾に、この建物を手に入れました。
2年間使用されていなかったので、まずは雑草抜きからスタート。意外とこれが大変だった。期待で胸がいっぱいだが、この後の苦労は未だわからず。

May 2013

Jake purchases the property “The SilverView”, located 250km (155miles) from Tokyo on Madarao Mountain. In need of several essential repairs, the property had not been in use for over 2 years but had been a company guesthouse as well as a pension/B&B in the past. Plans and ideas for Crawfish Madarao dance in Jake’s mind as he wraps up his work with Crawfish Akasaka.

クローフィッシュ赤坂の営業から離れました。
北千住で9年間。赤坂で4年間。ライブバーの営業は営業は楽しいものでしたが、新規一転、田舎暮らし、雪国での生活という新しい挑戦に挑むことになりました。
クローフィッシュ赤坂はその後、現在も続けて営業しております。

Jake and Carol sang their last duet at Crawfish Akasaka as the owners (almost a trio as Carol is 8 months pregnant in this photo). It’s time for this family to try snow country with Crawfish Madarao Lodge. Jake has hopes of bringing music into the new venture by organizing a summer music festival on the mountain and bringing musicians to play in the lounge area. One step at a time. He needs to get a handle on customers that are supposed to stay after last call! J

改築作業を開始しました。ブルーシートで覆われていてわかりませんが、なにしろ玄関からして壊れています。ほぼすべては自力での作業。まずはもの凄い仕事量の多さに途方に暮れてみる。

July 2013
Jake owned and operated Crawfish Akasaka for 4 years before transferring ownership in July 2013. Crawfish Akasaka re-opened under new ownership and management in July 2013 after a short break for sound-proofing renovations. It continues today as a live music venue run by passionate musicians and is a sister-business to Crawfish Madarao.

2013年7月

解体作業を開始しました。ちょっと楽しいけど、意外と力のいる仕事。自身の肉体改造の始まりでもありました。床も歪んでいるところがあって、部屋によっては一度剥がすはめになりました。2部屋をぶち抜き、大きな部屋を作ります。

July 2013
The heavy lifting begins. Jake is about to understand what he has really gotten in for. So far, his renovations have always involved one room at a time. Crawfish Madarao has several and needs a new roof (blue tarp), plumbing, flooring, electrical wiring, and all the amenities of a guesthouse – good luck!

Expecting their first baby in August, Carol begins maternity leave from her recruitment job in and helps out with some of the renovations – got to get out some of that hormonal energy somehow! She plans to focus on the baby and being near Jake through the first winter season at Crawfish Madarao.

2013年8月

入り口の屋根を再構築しています。問題の屋根は雪で押しつぶされ、玄関のドアもきちんと開かない状態でした。雪下ろしが必要な傾斜の緩やかな屋根から、 傾斜をきつくして雪が自然落下するように改築。何しろ初めてのことゆえ、試行錯誤しながら、結局は現物合わせで作り上げました。

わたくし事ながら、ベイビーが誕生しました。

Fashionably late! Baby girl is born in late August and the couple takes a few weeks to focus on parenthood and welcome Carol’s mother from the US.

September 2013

Carol’s mother visiting gives a very good excuse for some area exploring. There are beautiful hiking trails and waterfalls in the Shinshuu area of Nagano. A short drive to the sea of Japan and cliffs resembling those of Hawai’i’s Napali Coast.
